Kazakhstan to meet domestic needs and preserve grain export potential — Askar Mamin

At the government session chaired by Prime Minister Askar Mamin, the progress of harvesting in 2021 was considered.

Minister of Agriculture Yerbol Karashukeyev, akims of Akmola region Yermek Marzhikpayev, Kostanay region — Arkhimed Mukhambetov, North Kazakhstan region — Kumar Aksakalov presented their reports.

The total sown area of agricultural crops this year amounted to 23 million hectares, which is 322 thousand hectares more compared to 2020. Cereals and leguminous crops are located on an area of 16.1 million hectares (including wheat — 12.9 million hectares), oilseeds — 3.1 million hectares, vegetables, melons and potatoes — 473.8 thousand hectares, cotton — 109.7 thousand hectares, sugar beet — 21.7 thousand hectares, forage crops — 3.2 million hectares.

The trend in the world with the harvest of cereals is complicated by weather conditions and, as a result, a decrease in wheat yields. It is expected that the harvest of wheat in Canada will decrease by 34.5%, in Russia — by 15%, and in the USA — by 7%.

In Kazakhstan, it is planned to ensure the gross harvest of grain and oilseeds at the level of 18 million tons, incl. 16 million tons of grain and leguminous crops. To date, about 95% of the harvesting work has been completed. With an average yield of 9.5 c/ha, 14.3 million tons of grain and about 200 thousand tons of oilseeds were threshed.

“Despite the decrease in the volume of grain due to the drought this year, the country's domestic demand for grain will be fully met. At the same time, the potential for grain export will remain in the amount of about 6-6.5 million tons,” Mamin said.

The quality indicators of the new harvest have grown significantly. The volume of high-quality Hi-Pro wheat with gluten over 28% reached 74% (2020 — 60%) of the harvested volume. Wheat of this class is in high demand in the world market.

The Head of Government noted the need to ensure the supply of grain by agricultural producers to the Food Contract Corporation within the framework of the forward purchase program.

Akimats of the regions and the Ministry of Agriculture were instructed to complete the harvest as soon as possible, to ensure that the seeds are backfilled in full for the harvest of 2022.

The Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development, together with JS NC KTZh, was instructed to take measures to provide agricultural producers with rolling stock for uninterrupted grain transportation.
