Alikhan Smailov urges ArcelorMittal Temirtau to take effective measures to reduce workplace accidents

As part of his working trip to the Karaganda region, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov visited the industrial and social facilities of the city of Temirtau.

The Head of Government got acquainted with the work of the blast furnace-3 of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC, where he discussed the issues of ensuring industrial safety with the leadership of the region and the enterprise.

Alikhan Smailov noted that metallurgical production is a zone of a high level of danger. At the same time, this problem is especially acute at ArcelorMittal Temirtau, and the measures implemented at the enterprise to create safe working conditions do not yet allow to radically improve the situation.

In the Prime Minister’s opinion, one of the main reasons for the occurrence of negative consequences is the insufficient allocation of investments for the modernization of technological processes, including the renewal of obsolete and physically worn out equipment.

“We cannot put up with the fact that 10-12 people die at work every year. The depreciation of the equipment is very high, the level of investment in modernization is 2-3 times lower compared to other enterprises. This needs to be corrected. It is necessary to gradually increase investments and, first of all, ensure the safety of your employees,” Smailov addressed the company's management.

In addition, Alikhan Smailov focused on the issues of ensuring environmental safety.

“It is also critical to address the environmental issues. The relevant tasks have been set before us by the Head of State. Therefore, we must work together on this issue,” he said.

In this regard, the Head of Government called on the management of the enterprise to develop effective measures to prevent accidents at work and comply with environmental obligations.

Further, Alikhan Smailov got acquainted with the operations of the plant for the production of industrial gases, Linde Gas Kazakhstan LLP, which had been launched after the signing of a memorandum of cooperation during the visit of the Head of State to Germany.

“This example shows that the agreements between the countries are being successfully implemented. This is a good incentive for other foreign companies considering the opportunity to invest in our country,” the Prime Minister said.

Alikhan Smailov added that the company's solutions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions can be successfully applied at metallurgical and chemical plants, oil and gas and energy enterprises in other regions of the country.

In Temirtau, the head of government also visited the kindergarten ‘Academy of Little Talents,’ which implements an improved program for the upbringing and development of children.

In total, 322 new kindergartens are planned to be commissioned throughout the country this year, including 14 in the Karaganda region.

The Prime Minister stressed that in order to provide each child with high-quality preschool education and training, systematic work will continue to develop public-private partnerships and stimulate business.
